Railway Museum

Project

The building of a narrow gauge railway museum is not your usual building and heating project, but considering the different heating options is still vital.

The Narrow Gauge Railway Museum at Tywyn Wharf is a popular visitor attraction, and to improve the service they commissioned a two storey custom built facility to house their exhibits. As the walls were taken over by displays, and with constant public access to the exhibits and café, the type of heating was a crucial decision.

Solution

Due to the lack of available wall space, traditional radiators were not an option. The museum choose to install a Polyplumb under floor heating system, providing them with the capabilities to totally free their walls of anything unnecessary and devote the whole space to exhibits. Floor heating is ideal for areas with limited wall space, and opens up a whole range of design possibilities.

The Polyplumb solid floor system, as with the other solutions in the range, is easy to install, and the lightweight plastic floor panels fit together for ease of storage and handling. The panels are laid on the sub floor, can be easily cut to fit the shape of the room, and form a grid that sets the pipes at exact centres and prevents it from moving while screeding.

The entire plumbing aspect of the project was completed within six weeks, and the contracting company, Marval Heating, were impressed with the speed and ease of the installation process. Polyplumb floor heating systems also provide reliable long-term performance, and, once installed, are virtually maintenance free.

The Polyplumb systems use flexible polybutylene piping, which offers ease of handling and is safer and quicker to install than alternative plastic pipe systems. The installation of our systems is completed in one stage, reducing the cost of installation, as well as the length of time installers spend on each property. Floor heating is up to 20% quicker to install than radiator systems, and also reduces the decorating time, as there is no need to remove newly fitted radiators to paint behind them.

Floor heating is ideal for large open plan buildings, such as the museum, as they provide a comfortable and energy efficient form of heat. They emit gentle radiant warmth across the entire floor surface, heating the whole room evenly and eliminating draughts and cold spots. This warmth is then absorbed by people and the objects around them, and doesn’t need air movement to be effective.

A Polyplumb floor heating system is also perfect for public buildings, as it prevents any potential hazards from radiators, such as sharp, protruding edges and extremely hot surfaces.

The Tywyn Wharf Narrow Gauge Railway Museum is now a warm and inviting atmosphere for potential visitors, combining the modern technology of floor heating with the history of Victorian engineering.
